Seems like every bar that hosts live music has supplemented half of their nights with some DJ performing a set. Every hipster with a Mac Book®, Beats by Dre®, and powered speaker (likely Behringer®) is now a DJ. Easiest gig in the world - buy a premium subscription to Spotify™ and start creating playlists.

I hope I live to see the day when young people start picking up instruments again. Neil Young is correct - people don't know what music is supposed to sound like anymore. ... er-at-sxsw

Think I'm gonna buy a sub to go with my PA and start moonlighting as DJ GOfaqYOself. Easy money.

Blame Skrillex.

Funny thing is some of these DJ's have more gear than a full band, and some of their light shows are amazing, but youre right - some just take a laptop or ipad/ipod and two powered speakers with premade setlists. I went to a bridal show not long ago and some DJ's were there advertising. I asked a few what it would cost me for a 4 hour wedding reception - I got quotes ranging from $75o - $1,100. Some showed me their booking schedules - booked solid for 18 months in advance - unbelievable. Some of these guys have 3-4 different sized systems too, for different sized veunes, but again - not one under $750. I thought about it myself. -
