"Best Of" Awards Events

I have to admit I totally hate these things.

There is one coming up for the theatre community, and honestly, its just a big drink-fest.

But really more ridiculous and inherent in all "best of" decisions, they are totally subjective.

But I have to tell you, people take these things so damned seriously. As if winning one would actually mean one was the "best of" some category.

Will people never learn?

I'm really hoping to get nominated at whatever version of the BMA's exists now for tallest bass player, and losing to someone who is much shorter than I.

Exactly my point. Why claim an award for something you cannot tangibly measure?

Why not be honest and call it "Most Notable Guitarist" or "Outstanding Guitarist"?

That's why ideas like the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame inducts people who have a pool of genres and accomplishments, not claiming they are the "best" of anything.

Ugh.

One of my college buds is a playwrite in Buffalo. I'm demanding she put me in something so I can not be nominated in two genres.

I'm nominated myself for about fifteen Artvoice awards. No luck though.
Spree tasked me with coming up with nominees for their awards, and writing about the winner of best cover band. And if I'm not working yet I'll be at the awards later this month, though I was told it's also a big drink fest, but without presentations or speeches. Just a bunch of plaques on a table and booze and food. I like booze and food.

And as predicted, it was a drink fest with all awards doled out rather evenly to all theatres without actual regard to merit.
