of course it varies by person, including size, gender, tolerance, remaining liver function, and exactly how sober they are when they're sober.
Maybe those people who don't get "impaired" are just always a little drunk so you don't notice it?

I can get by on 1 or 2 drinks in 5 hours, not feel intoxicated at all, and KNOW I'm safe to drive home. More than that, I've been "drinking". I tend to judge others by that same scale.. if I see you with a fresh drink in your hand every hour, I'm not getting into any vehicle you're driving. If I know you've had more than 2, I'm going to keep an eye on ya.

Personally I have known some very intelligent and successful people who drink more than just a couple on a regular or even daily basis and it has very little effect on their life at any scale, and I'm not talking about 20somethings who have the advantage of youth. Same with the devil's lettuce. On the other hand, I've known people of all ages who suffer all the stereotypical negative consequences associated with consuming chemicals. I think with most things, looking for some convenient rule to use is a shortcut that will not serve anyone's interest. You have to know the individual and put their actions into the context of their life. The whole "rules" thing is how people both overreact, AND miss, or rationalize theirs or someone else's, problem.

and what kind. salad isn't much of a help, but grease lining your stomach will slow down the effects. (speaking from personal experience here!)
still, the alcohol will get into your blood eventually, right?

I try not to drink when I gig.. and I'm not much of a drinker to begin with. If people buy the band shots, I pace myself and dillute them with lots of water in between. Some people might need a drink/shot before the gig to loosen up, I don't. You don't want to know what happens when I get loose!
